Welcome to Zanzibar, where your time will be spent near the sparkling beach and the beautiful Indian Ocean. Your time is very much your own, and with two nights on this piece of paradise, you can soak up all the relaxation you deserve. Marvel at the soft lapping of the waves, as the beautiful clear waters of the Indian Ocean meet the perfect white sands of Zanzibar. In addition, you will have the chance to find out about Zanzibar’s history, with a tour of atmospheric Stone Town.
While you will be chilling-out by the beach most of the time, perhaps cooling off in the hotel pool or enjoying an ocean swim or some water sports, you will also be guided around historic Stone Town, the characterful quarter of the island capital with its narrow streets and patchwork of architectural styles. After your two-night stay here, we will transfer you back to the airport for your return flight.
Welcome to Zanzibar! On arrival at Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, you will be met by our driver guide who will take you on the short, 20-minute transfer to your hotel in Stone Town, the historic quarter of Zanzibar City. You can choose to swim in the stunning infinity pool, with views over the Indian Ocean, enjoy the spa (at extra cost), work out in the fitness room or simply kick back on a sun lounger and soak up the rays. When it comes to dining, the hotel’s Zamani Residence concept truly excels, composed of a variety of terraced restaurants drawing on influences from Indian, Arabic and continental cuisine, as well as offering fish caught locally.
This morning you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel, before meeting our expert local guide for a tour of fascinating Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Over the centuries, many cultures have left their impressions on Zanzibar and it is perhaps in Stone Town where you can most easily see their influences. Your guide will lead you first to the colourful market, awash with exotic smells and buzzing with bartering locals.
Afterwards, you will visit the calm of the 19th C cathedral, built on the former site of the slave market after the 1873 abolition of slavery. As you wander the narrow streets and alleys, you’ll pass the Arab houses with their inner courtyards, hidden behind heavy doors. You can compare their style with the Indian residences, adorned with balustrades and metal railings.
Amongst the town’s historic sites are the ‘Tip Tip House,’ the Old Fort and the People’s Palace Museum. Lunch will be taken at the Silk Route Indian rooftop restaurant, with views to the ocean. The Silk Route is full of character, so enjoy the excellent cuisine, perhaps washing it down with a cocktail. In the evening, you will be guided back to your Stone Town hotel for dinner and an evening at leisure.

The best time to visit Zanzibar depends largely on what activities you’d like to do while there. Generally speaking, the driest and warmest months are from June to November, though this also coincides with the peak tourism season which means higher prices and more crowded attractions. For travelers looking to experience the unique wildlife of Zanzibar, the best time to visit is during the wet season (December-May) when water levels are high and animals congregate in large numbers near dry river beds. However, conditions can be unpredictable during this time so it’s important to have a good guide who knows the area well. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, you are sure to be enchanted by the unique beauty and culture of this special archipelago!
Zanzibar has a wide range of accommodation options to suit any budget. From luxury resorts and boutique hotels, to beach bungalows and self-catering apartments, you’ll be sure to find something that fits your needs. For a truly unique experience, consider staying in a traditional Swahili house or at one of the island’s many campsites. Wherever you decide to stay, you’ll be sure to have an unforgettable visit in Zanzibar!
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of two main islands: Unguja (also known as Zanzibar) and Pemba, and several smaller islands. Although the islands are part of the United Republic of Tanzania, they have their own government and are considered a semi-autonomous region. Technically, Zanzibar is owned by the United Republic of Tanzania, but it maintains its own distinct identity with its own flag and anthem. In terms of culture, language, cuisine, and history, Zanzibar is unique from mainland Tanzania—it even has a different time zone! Zanzibar is a prime example of an autonomous region within a larger country, and it serves as an important reminder that identity is more than just borders.
No matter what the official answer may be—yes, technically Tanzania owns Zanzibar—Zanzibar’s culture and people should not be overlooked. The beauty and complexity of Zanzibar should be celebrated, not overshadowed by its place within the United Republic of Tanzania. So while the answer to the question “Which country owns Zanzibar?” may be Tanzania, the cultural essence of this incredible archipelago is much greater than any one nation can contain!
The capital of Zanzibar is Stone Town, located on Unguja island. As the commercial center of Zanzibar, Stone Town has been an important trading hub since the 7th century. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to much of Zanzibar’s culture and history. With its winding alleyways, colorful bazaars, and stunning architecture, Stone Town is a must-visit for anyone trekking to this unique archipelago!
The best way to get around in Zanzibar is by taxis, either hired from the street or arranged through a hotel. Taxis are usually reliable and affordable but it’s important to agree on a price before getting in the car. Alternatively, public buses known as “daladala” are an excellent option for travelers on a budget. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a motorbike or take a ferry between islands. Whichever method of transportation you choose, make sure to enjoy the stunning views and vibrant culture Zanzibar has to offer!
Yes, Zanzibar is home to a number of unique festivals throughout the year. From Sauti za Busara, an annual music festival featuring African performers from around the world, to MwakaKogwa, a celebration of the harvest season with traditional dancing and cultural performances. There’s also Ramadan, when Muslims fast during the daylight hours and celebrate at night with special foods and family gatherings. For a truly unforgettable experience in Zanzibar, make sure to visit during one of these vibrant festivals!
