The Serengeti National Park, famous for its annual wildebeest migration, showcases a breathtaking spectacle as millions of animals traverse the plains. Meanwhile, the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a unique haven where visitors can observe a dense concentration of game within a collapsed volcanic caldera.
The country’s varied landscapes, from the baobab-studded Tarangire National Park to the verdant Selous Game Reserve, offer opportunities to see the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—alongside countless other species in their natural habitats. The official languages of Tanzania are Kiswahili and English. More than 100 different languages are spoken across the country, but almost everybody at popular visitor destinations will be able to speak some English.
Tanzania’s unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, but our advice is to use US Dollars only – and in cash: credit cards and traveller’s cheques (although accepted in most establishments) incur transaction fees. ATMs are found throughout the major towns and cities in Tanzania, but not in the national parks and game reserves.
Note: US Dollar bills printed before 2006 are not accepted in Tanzania.
Tipping is not mandatory in Tanzania but is a custom. Is a way of showing gratitude after receiving good service. Tipping is a personal thing though tipping guides for Tanzania range from $10- $ 20 per day. So do your simple math to add on your safari cost.
In Tanzania, be sure to indulge in the flavorful delights of Ugali, a maize-based staple, often paired with succulent Nyama Choma, grilled meat infused with aromatic spices. Don’t miss out on the fragrant Pilau, a rice dish cooked with a symphony of spices, or the savory Mishkaki skewers, perfect for a quick street food fix.
For a sweet touch, savor the coconut-infused Mandazi, a fried bread treat. Wash it all down with Chai Masala, a spicy tea blend, or a cup of locally grown Tanzanian coffee, renowned for its rich flavor. Dive into Tanzania’s culinary scene for a taste of its vibrant culture and diverse flavors.
Tanzania has a pleasant, tropical climate, but it has large regional climatic variations influenced by several factors, including altitude. The hottest and most humid part of the country is the coast. Other low-lying areas, such as the western and southern parks, are also hot but less humid. The rest of the interior is much milder and often cold at night. Tanzania has a distinct Dry and Wet season.
In Tanzania you could track the Big Five or see the Great Migration, summit Mount Kilimanjaro, relax on white-sand beaches, and snorkel on coral reefs teeming with tropical fish.
An incredibly diverse destination, Tanzania’s wildlife is a major draw and for many visitors, the highlight is witnessing the Great Migration of two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles across the Serengeti. For others, it’s tracking the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater, taking a hot air balloon flight over herds of elephant or giraffe, or tracking chimpanzees. Or you may want to slow down on a boating safari in Nyerere National Park or a walking safari in Ruaha National Park and get closer to smaller species.
Alternatively, you could take on the challenge of hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro on a multi-day trek, see turtles off the coast, visit traditional villages, or simply laze on powder-soft sands and swim in turquoise seas.
In Tanzania you can stay in rustic safari camps, luxurious lodges, on private islands, and in ocean-front resorts with extensive facilities. While on safari, you’ll have the choice of opting for simple tented camps where you’ll wake to the sound of wildlife at a nearby watering hole, or stylishly intimate lodges hidden deep in the forest.
Elsewhere, you could stay at a luxurious coastal resort with lots of activities, choose private villas, simple cottages, or even an underwater room. If it’s local history and character you’re after, you can stay in a former sultan’s palace in Zanzibar’s Stone Town.
You could visit Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar on a trip to Tanzania, among many other wildlife areas. Most visitors choose to visit national parks that link together geographically to make the most of their time, and then follow the adventure of a safari with time relaxing on the white sands of Tanzania’s coast or islands.
Tanzania’s safari areas can be divided into the northern, southern, and western circuits. In the north are Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire and Lake Manyara national parks. In the south, you could visit Nyerere National Park and Ruaha National Park, while to the west Katavi and Mahale Mountains national parks combine well. If you’re up for a challenge, you could tag on a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro before unwinding on the palm-fringed beaches in Zanzibar.
A safari in Tanzania is a great way to see the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and the black rhino — but you’ll also see giraffe, zebra, and occasionally cheetah, among many other species. Two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Serengeti during the Great Migration and in their wake a slew of predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, and crocodiles follow.
A boat safari in Nyerere National Park promises sightings of hippo, sable antelope, and vibrant birdlife, while hiking in Mahale Mountains National Park, brings the prospect of spotting chimpanzees sweeping through the trees.
Main International Airports
Kilimanjaro International Airport – Tanzania’s second international airport – serves the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara. However, you need to transfer to nearby Arusha Airport for charter flights to these safari destinations. International flights often arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport late in the day, so an overnight stay in Arusha is usually necessary. Dar-es-Salaam International Airport – Tanzania’s main airport – is the gateway to the Indian Ocean coast and Zanzibar, as well as Nyerere National Park (previously Selous) and Ruaha National Park.
Guided road transfers and game drives in Tanzania are conducted in closed 4x4s with big windows and pop-up roofs, although visitors to destinations like Mahale will enjoy a boat transfer across Lake Tanganyika. Most safari destinations have extensive road networks and closed vehicles are therefore the norm when doing long-distance road transfers between airstrips, camps and lodges in Tanzania.
A closed 4×4 game drive vehicle generally has three rows of seating and features a pop-up roof hatch that can be raised for game viewing and taking photographs.
Yes, visitors to Tanzania can use public transport, including daladalas (minibuses), city buses, bodabodas (motorcycle taxis), and tuk-tuks. These options are affordable and widely available, but can be crowded and less comfortable. For greater convenience and reliability, especially when traveling to tourist destinations or remote areas, private car hire or guided tours are recommended.
Almost all visitors to Tanzania require a visa. You must contact the relevant issuing authorities in good time (ideally, several months in advance) to ascertain the entry requirements to Tanzania, and to arrange the necessary permits and visas. We strongly encourage all clients entering Tanzania via Kilimanjaro International Airport to obtain their visas online at the Tanzania Immigration Department before arriving in Tanzania. E-visas can take 2 to 3 weeks to be issued.
Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for Tanzania, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country.
If you’re coming from or transiting through a country affected by yellow fever, the government of Tanzania may request proof of vaccination against the disease. Check the list of countries at risk of yellow fever and speak to your doctor as vaccination is not advised for everyone.
There’s a high risk of malaria in all areas of Tanzania below 1,800 m (5,906 ft). There’s also a risk of malaria in Zanzibar. See your doctor to discuss which antimalarials will suit you best.
To lower your risk, avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by wearing long, loose clothing, wearing repellent, and using mosquito nets where provided.
When traveling to Tanzania, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date and has at least two blank pages for visa stamps.
Additionally, keep copies of your passport, both physical and digital, in case it gets lost or stolen. By checking these details, you can ensure a smooth entry into Tanzania.
